How the Song Came to Be
In 1981, David and Sherri Bird were neighbors of ours. We all lived in academy student housing at the time. As we got to know the Birds, I showed Sherri a melody I wrote, that had been used in a stage musical called Can't Stand up Still! The song was never included in the live product. There were some reservations almost it, then I took it out of the show. The bear witness seemed to accept its run (45 performances at Robert Redford's Sundance Outdoor Theater—now defunct), with no other future prospects, then information technology reinforced my idea of removing from the show and remaking it equally a Christmas song.
Sherri took the photocopy of my hand-fatigued manuscript with the crossed out original lyrics and said, "Let me call back about it. If it'southward going to exist a Christmas song, it needs to be something different."
Several months went by. I wondered if anything would come of information technology, only I received an unexpected telephone call around ten pm on a Dominicus evening.
Dan: "Howdy."
David: "Are you in your PJs however?"
Dan:(quite perplexed) "No, (suspension, contemplating hanging upward) are yous?"
David: "You mean I didn't catch yous in bed? Well, what are you doing and so?"
Dan: "Who is this?"
David: "How soon can you be over hither?"
Dan: "I don't think I want to be over in that location."
David: "Sherri finished the song. How soon can you exist here?!"
Dan: "Oh! This is Bird! Nosotros'll be there in 10 minutes!"
We all sat down and Sherri sabbatum at the pianoforte and played and sang. She choked up a little when she sang "do not despair, your star is still there." In fact, we were all unexpectedly emotional about the message of this vocal. Niggling did I know how my life would change in the coming years. I had no idea of the catastrophic losses of loved ones, homes, property and income ahead of me. I couldn't take always predicted that I would exist shunned by people and organizations I thought would e'er love and accept me. I had no idea that I would one day, myself, look in the sky in anger and wonder why such things happened not only to me merely to those I loved.
But the years accept changed me. For the improve. I take learned that my star is still there. I have learned that vocal wasn't written equally a gift for everyone else, it was written every bit a gift to me, too. No i escapes the awful stuff in life. But it is how nosotros choose to let information technology bear on us that defines our path. Nosotros can swallow our ain bitterness and hate and thus poison ourselves and anybody around u.s.a., or we can learn the lessons life has handed us and notice our peace. Find that connection with that star that never stops shining, the Presence in the universe that keeps u.s. from ever being alone, those "smile eyes, shining up at me."
"Newborn King" by Dan Freed
Curl to Go along
Words by Sherri Otteson Bird
The night was long, we traveled far.
At times I looked, only could non meet the star,
Still nonetheless, it shone unveiling then
The way to Bethlehem.
My heart held fearfulness 'mid puzzled joy,
For I was only a small shepherd male child,
And on a hillside soft and green,
I heard an angel sing.
I saw the midnight heaven aflame with
Radiant angels bathed in light, holy light,
Bringing word that Christ was built-in and
Beckoning to detect Him, go and detect Him.
A sweeter face up I ne'er will see
Than of those loving eyes grinning up at me.
I found a Rex, I found a Friend,
That night in Bethlehem.
But life goes on, years across i brief dark of my youth—
Time clouds my vision of truth.
And though I stumble and fall I can hear someone call,
"Practice not despair, your star is nevertheless at that place."
That Christmas night and so long ago
Has filled my life with light considering I know
That He lives now equally He did and so
A King in Bethlehem,
Whose love never ends.
Polish for me again,
Star of Bethlehem.

I used to memorize the music considering I hated belongings it. My sister (also a office of the choir) and I would sing this vocal in harmony together for years. We forgot the afterwards parts, and the name of the song, simply it e'er had special meaning for me, and during hard times throughout my life, I would sing equally much as I could remember.
